One hour in office teeth whitening Vs At home
teeth whitening.
You can have
your teeth whitened in our office in one visit with Rembrandt.
The advantages of in office teeth whitening are obvious. It is
fast and it is safer than take home teeth whitening What are the
disadvantages? It costs more and from time to time re-treatments
or touchups are necessary. How often? It depends on the home
care and dark fluids the patients drink. For more Q and As see
below:
- Does
it work? Teeth whitening procedures
work for most patients. Surely you have seen some people out
there whose teeth seem to glow in the dark?
- When
does it not work? It does not work
well for patients with stain that is inside their teeth or
patients with tetracycline stain. Though there are some
reports of success if used for several months.
- Which
is better in office bleaching or home bleaching?
There are advantages of both ways. In office bleaching can be
done faster and is by some considered safer. This is because
hydrogen peroxide is suspected as a carcingen or cancer
causing agent. It has not been proven. In office bleaching
uses a dam to keep the bleach out of your mouth and soft
tissue areas. The advantage of home bleaching is that you have
control and it is cheaper. A disadvantage is it takes longer.
For some patients in office bleaching combined with at home
bleaching gives the best results.
- How do over the
counter products compare? OTC products are more difficult to
use because the trays do not fit snugly. Also the patient is
apt to swallow more of the bleaching agent.
- What are the
complications, risks, is it safe? Hot and cold sensitivity
when there are exposed roots or deep cavities. It has been in
the news about a patient in Des Moines needing multiple root
canal therapy due to bleaching but I have yet to see that
problem in our practice.
